Who is harrying whom in Afghanistan?

Posted by Mark 25 August 2007

Watching film of our boys fighting in Afghanistan, I couldn't help but be struck by the parallel with American forces in Vietnam. Modern armies, fighting with everything technology can provide against a rag-tag enemy fighting with the most basic of equipment and using the simplest of tactics.

Even the strategy of heavily defended compounds supplied by helicopters is eerily familiar. We send patrols out from those compounds to search and destroy the enemy. But the enemy moves swiftly and lightly around the countryside while we employ ever-heavier armour and turn ourselves into ever-more ponderous and vulnerable targets.
