The Falklands War, 25 years ago today
Posted by Mark 12 Jun 2007
This morning we in the UK were waking up to news about the main battles to retake the islands which had started late last night and ran on into the early hours of today. 42 Commando RM had attacked Mount Harriet and lost two "Royals", 45 Commando RM had attacked Two Sisters and lost seven Marines and a Sapper, and 3 PARA attacked Mount Longdon and lost twenty one Paras and two attached Engineers. 3 PARA's losses included Sgt McKay who was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. Three Falkland Island civilians had also been killed by 'friendly fire', the only civilian casualties of the war.
Later today, HMS Glamorgan, which had been providing close-in naval gunfire support for the attacks would be hit by an Exocet missile fired from the back of a lorry outside Stanley. Thirteen sailors lost their lives. The Royal Navy actively participated in all the land battles, perhaps a unique feature of the war.
