The Falklands War, the Chinese connection

Posted by Mark 7 Jun 2007

I don't know how many people realise it, but eight Hong Kong Chinese crewmen were counted amongst the British casualties of the war. They have a place of honour on the South Atlantic Medal Association "Garden of Remembrance" which I look after. They are listed on all the other relevant memorials as well.

For several years now I have made sporadic attempts to find out anything I can about them so we can have some personal information about them on their memorial page, ideally at least a photo. I have faxed and emailed some newspapers in Hong Kong, and every time I come in contact with someone based there I usually try and recruit them to the cause. All, so far, to no avail. The problem in large part is that the Anglicised names we have for them are meaningless to the Chinese themselves - those were not their 'real' names.

So I'm appealing for anyone in Hong Kong to help. If you know of any way of making contact with the relatives of those who died so that we may properly remember them and give them the respect they deserve, that would be hugely appreciated.

They were:

Laundryman LAI Chi Keung HMS Sheffield, 4th May 1982
Seaman CHAN Chi Shing SS Atlantic Conveyor, 25th May 1982
Laundryman KYE Ben Kwo HMS Coventry, 25th May 1982
Seaman NG Por SS Atlantic Conveyor, 25th May 1982
Electrical Fitter LEUNG Chau RFA Sir Galahad, 8th June 1982
Butcher SUNG Yuk Pai RFA Sir Galahad, 8th June 1982
Seaman YEUNG Shui Kam RFA Sir Tristram, 8th June 1982
Bosun YU Sik Chee RFA Sir Tristram, 8th June 1982

Their trades and dates of death may assist in identify them.
